That's it. ## The minimum viable first entry Open a voice recorder or a voice journal app. Say today's date out loud. Then say one true sentence about right now: what happened today, or what's on your mind. Stop when you run out. That's a complete voice diary entry. Louis Armstrong left over 700 of these, some of them barely longer than that. ## You need - A phone - Somewhere private enough to talk out loud for two minutes - Nothing else. No app is required, though a transcribing one makes the entry searchable later. ## Day 1 Pick a moment that already happens daily: the walk to your car, the last few minutes before sleep, making coffee. Hit record there. Say the date. Say what happened, or what you're thinking, until you stop naturally. Don't script it first. Don't re-listen after. ## Week 1 Keep the same trigger every day. Some entries will be ten seconds, some will be five minutes. Both are correct: there's no minimum length and no maximum. If you miss a day, don't record a makeup entry about the missed day, just record today's normally. A voice diary has no page count to fall behind on. ## When you miss a day Nothing to fix. Louise Bourgeois kept her spoken diary alongside a written one for over 80 years; Sunita Williams recorded hers three times a week, not daily, aboard the ISS. There is no rule that a voice diary has to be unbroken to count. Start the next entry the same way you started the first one: date, then whatever's true right now. ## What to say if you're stuck "I don't know what to say" is a valid recorded sentence. Keep talking from there. It usually breaks in a few seconds. Try it by voice: Brain Dump (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braindump-voice-note-journal/id6473446030): say today's date, talk until you run out, and the transcript is there to search later.
