No book to read, no theory to learn first, just one prompt and a place to speak it. ## What you need - A phone - 10 minutes, somewhere private enough to say something honest - One person who irritated you recently That's the whole list. ## Your first entry (do this now) Think of someone who irritated you in the last week or two, not a big betrayal, just a small, sharp annoyance. Name the exact trait that got under your skin. Then ask yourself, out loud: where does that same trait show up in my own life, even quietly, even in a small way I'd normally excuse? Example (spoken): My coworker interrupted me in a meeting today and it really got under my skin. The trait is... not letting other people finish. Where does that show up in me? Honestly, I do it in group chats all the time. I jump in before someone's done typing because I'm afraid of losing the thread of what I want to say. That's a complete first entry. You don't need to resolve it or feel better afterward. Noticing is the whole exercise today. ## Day 1 Do the projection-spotting prompt above, once, with one person. Don't try every shadow prompt you've seen on TikTok in one sitting. One irritation, one honest answer, done. ## Week 1 Pick a new small irritation each day and run it through the same question. By day 3 or 4, you'll likely notice a pattern: the same one or two traits keep showing up as the thing that "gets under your skin" from different people. That repetition is the actual signal, not a coincidence to explain away. ## When it surfaces more than discomfort Stop, don't push through it. Shadow prompts are built to dig at discomfort and shame on purpose, and that's expected. But if a prompt pulls up trauma, grief you haven't processed, or a spiral you can't step back from on your own, that's past what a solo journaling exercise is built to hold. Close the app and bring it to a therapist instead of continuing to dig alone. ## What comes next The full method page (/methods/shadow-work-journal) covers where the term comes from in Jung's own writing, how a TikTok trend turned it into a million-copy publishing phenomenon, and what the neighboring research actually supports (spoiler: no trial of shadow work journaling exists). Try it by voice: Brain Dump (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braindump-voice-note-journal/id6473446030) lets you speak the answer unedited the moment it forms, which matters for a method whose whole point is catching what you'd otherwise soften.
