You need the book you're already reading and thirty seconds after you put it down. ## You need - A book you're currently reading (or one you just finished) - A place to record three sentences: your phone, a notes app, or Brain Dump That's the whole list. ## Your first entry (under 2 minutes) Put the book down at any stopping point: end of a chapter, end of your reading session, whenever. Then say or write: - Title and date. "The Overstory, September 1st." - What happened. One sentence on what you just read. - What you thought. One sentence: agreed, disagreed, confused, moved. Whatever's true. That's a complete entry. Nothing else is required. ## Day 1 Read normally. When you stop, whether that's after one chapter or the whole book, speak or write your three sentences. Don't go back and add more later. One entry, done. ## Week 1 By the end of a week you'll have a handful of entries, maybe attached to one book or spread across several. Two adjustments to make once the habit sticks: - Note disagreement, not just what you liked. The entries worth rereading later are usually the ones where you pushed back on something. - Pull one quote if a line actually stopped you. You don't need to transcribe passages by default, but when a sentence is worth keeping, say it out loud so it's captured verbatim. ## When you miss a day You didn't miss anything. A reading journal isn't a streak, it's a record of when a book actually gave you something to say. Some books you'll finish without a single entry, and that's a valid outcome, not a failure. Pick the habit back up the next time something in what you're reading is worth thirty seconds. ## Going deeper Once the three-sentence habit sticks, the full method, including formats, the commonplace-book overlap, and what research actually supports, is on the reading journal method page (/methods/reading-journal).
