You need one place to write ideas down the moment they happen, and the willingness to write them badly. ## You need - One running file or notebook (that's it) - A way to date each entry - Ten seconds, whenever an idea shows up No timer, no prompts, no daily quota. An idea log has no session; it just sits open, waiting for the next fragment. ## Day 1: your first entry Right now, write down one idea, however small, in this shape: [date]: [the idea, in one line] Example: 2026-09-01: app idea: a timer that only counts up, never down That's it. Do not explain it, evaluate it, or decide if it's good. The entry is done the moment the idea is on the page. ## Week 1: build the habit of capturing, not writing For the first week, the only goal is catching ideas as they happen, not producing good entries. Some days you'll add five lines. Some days none, and that's fine, an idea log has no quota. - Keep the file open or easy to reach. The whole practice fails if opening it takes more than a few seconds. - Write fragments, not paragraphs. "line for the essay: memory is a rough draft" is a complete entry. - Resist the urge to develop the idea on the spot. Capture, don't build. Development is a separate, later task. - Add a one- or two-word tag if it helps you find things later ("app idea," "line," "gift"), but the date alone is enough structure to start. ## When you miss a day There is nothing to catch up on. An idea log has no streak to protect and no entry owed for a day you didn't have an idea worth writing down, or didn't get to it. Just add the next entry whenever the next idea shows up. The log's value comes from coverage over months, not an unbroken daily record. ## Making it easier Speaking an idea is faster than finding a notebook and a pen, especially for ideas that hit while you're driving, walking, or in the middle of something else. Try it by voice: Brain Dump (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braindump-voice-note-journal/id6473446030): speak the idea the moment it happens and it lands as a dated, searchable entry, no notebook or app-switch required.
