Start with one entry, right now, about whatever is directly in front of you. ## You need - A notebook, note, or voice recorder you can reach in seconds - A clock or timestamp - One thing you can currently observe That's the entire setup. No categories, no template, no long entries required. ## Day 1: your first entry Look at whatever is around you right now and write down only what you can directly observe: what you see, hear, or measure. Timestamp it. Example: 14:12: rain started, three people at the bus stop moved under the shelter, one kept standing in the open Not: 14:12: miserable weather, people looked annoyed The first version is a field note. The second one is an interpretation wearing a field note's clothes. If a judgment word ("miserable," "annoyed," "great") is doing the work in your sentence, rewrite it around what you actually saw. ## Week 1: separate observing from interpreting For the first week, practice noticing the line between the two, not producing polished entries. - Timestamp every entry. Without a time, you can't later put entries in sequence, which is most of the point. - Use numbers over adjectives. "Six minutes," "twice," "three people," beat "a while," "a lot," "some people." - If you want to add an interpretation, label it. Put it on its own line, in brackets, so the raw observation above it stays clean: [interpretation: maybe running late]. - Short is normal. A complete field note can be one line. Length is not the goal, accuracy is. ## When you miss a day Nothing to make up. Field notes are not a streak; they're a habit of noticing when you happen to be paying attention. Pick the practice back up with the next thing in front of you, no backlog, no reconstructed entries for days you didn't write anything. ## Making it easier Writing while observing is often impractical; speaking is not. A quiet, quick voice note lets you capture detail while your hands and eyes are still on whatever you're watching. Try it by voice: Brain Dump (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braindump-voice-note-journal/id6473446030): speak the observation the moment it happens and it lands as a timestamped, searchable entry, so the record stays close to the event instead of reconstructed later.
